Letter to the editor: An enriching life

To the editor:

What legacy will you leave behind when your time on earth is done? How will you be remembered?

Keith Loneker had quite a lengthy list of accomplishments that many of us would be proud of: Division I football player, NFL player, actor, devoted father and husband. That is what most people saw and what most media reports mention.

Not to belittle those impressive credentials, but I remember him more for his contribution to the youth of our city for over 15 years. Whether he was coaching youth sports, running summer training programs or working at the schools, his magnetic personality and infectious smile brightened all of those around him. Keith’s constant message to our kids was that hard work, dedication and a positive attitude are the keys to success in school, sports and life. He used his own life as an example, and who could argue with Big Keith?

His message was a great influence on my two sons. I am sure that it helped the lives of hundreds of other youths in Lawrence as well. Many of us would like to think that we contributed to making the earth a little bit better place. Keith’s contribution to our children over the years will make the earth a better place for generations to come.
