Journal-World launches local editorial cartoon feature called Drawing Attention
The Journal-World is launching a new feature called Drawing Attention, which will showcase the editorial cartoons of Lawrence resident Greg Kearney.
Unlike most editorial cartoons available today, Kearney’s will focus on local or state issues. Kearney served as the editorial cartoonist for the Casper Star-Tribune in Casper, Wyoming from the 1980s until 2006. He, among other staff members of the paper, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1985 for a public service project that investigated the need for improved natural gas regulation.
Kearney moved to Lawrence, the hometown of his wife, a little more than a year ago.
Like all editorial cartoons, the opinions expressed by Kearney will be his, rather than the official editorial position of the Journal-World. Kearney said he brings a definite philosophy to his cartoons but he also tries to judge each issue on its merits.
“My politics are traditional labor Democratic,” Kearney said. “It is old time, 1930s style New Democrat stuff. But, I’m also interested in performance more than ideological purity.”
Kearney’s cartoons will appear regularly on LJWorld.com, and selected cartoons also will appear on the Opinion page of the Journal-World print edition.
