30-year-old woman shot to death in south Lawrence

Detectives investigate around the scene where a 30-year-old Lawrence woman was fatally shot Wednesday night, Dec. 27, 2017. The shooting occurred in the 2300 block of West 26th Street.

A 30-year-old woman was shot to death late Wednesday at an apartment complex in Lawrence, according to police.

The Lawrence Police Department confirmed Thursday morning that Lei Ala A. Turner died from a single gunshot wound to the chest at the August Place Apartments in south Lawrence.

Police were dispatched at 11:10 p.m. Wednesday to the complex at 2310 W. 26th St., where officers found Turner. Despite life-saving measures attempted at the scene, Turner died from her injuries, Officer Drew Fennelly said via email Thursday.

Investigators have identified a suspect in the incident and were working to locate him Thursday. Initial information indicated the shooting may have been accidental, Fennelly said.

Police declined to release further details about the incident Thursday. The shooting is the 10th homicide in Douglas County in the last six months and the sixth in Lawrence.

On Thursday morning, a woman identifying herself as the manager of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred told the Journal-World that Turner, the victim, did not live at the complex. Residents at the scene also told a reporter that they did not know Turner.
