Letter to the editor: Too much tuition

To the editor:

I wanted to say “right on” to William Skepnek’s April 7 column on the increase to university student debt.

I graduated from KU in 1952 at a tuition rate of $15 per credit hour, and I recall it had been $12 per credit hour.

In the wake of William Quantrill’s raid on Lawrence in 1863, there were about 150 orphans. The university offered them an education tuition free. This is not a case of old boomers. It is the reciprocal of the information age explosion. Those old populists who founded Lawrence on the hopes of a purchase at the Lecompton land office at $1.50 an acre also had higher hopes for their children. I think we are all poorer for the transformation.
