Preliminary hearing rescheduled for Lawrence man accused of kidnapping, beating college student

A preliminary hearing for a man accused of kidnapping a Lawrence college student and beating her over the course of nearly a week was rescheduled for December.

On Thursday, Shane Steven Allen, 30, appeared in court, and his attorney, Blake Glover, requested the hearing be moved.

According to allegations in an arrest affidavit filed in Douglas County District Court, Allen confined a 20-year-old woman to his home and beat her repeatedly over a six-day period. The two met on Tinder, a social media dating application.

Allen faces one felony charge of kidnapping and four felony charges of battery.

Douglas County District Court Judge Sally Pokorny granted Glover’s request and scheduled Allen to appear in court for his preliminary hearing, where she will decide if there is enough evidence to order a criminal trial, on Dec. 2.

Allen is currently being held in the Douglas County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

If convicted of all five felony charges, Allen could face nearly 32 years in prison.
