A man brandishing a knife Thursday afternoon was shocked with a Taser stun gun and arrested, police said.

Around 12:50 p.m. an officer patrolling the 200 block of West 10th Street noticed a disturbance involving two men and a woman, Lawrence Police Officer Drew Fennelly said in a news release.

Both men in the group were armed with knives, Fennelly said. One man dropped his knife when asked, but the other would not.

When the officer tried to detain the armed man, he ran, Fennelly said.

Several police officers stand in the 800 block of Tennessee Street where a man allegedly armed with a knife was arrested earlier Thursday afternoon. Before the arrest, officers used a Taser stun gun on the man.

Soon, two officers found the armed man in the 800 block of Tennessee Street, Fennelly said. Once again, the man refused to drop the knife, according to police, and he then brandished the weapon at the officers.

After refusing to drop the knife multiple times, one officer used a Taser stun gun on the man, though he continued to resist, Fennelly said. Eventually the officers wrestled the knife away from the man and arrested him.

Following Lawrence Police Department policy, the man, 20, was taken to the hospital to be examined, Fennelly said.

At the scene, Lawrence Police Sgt. Mark Unruh said the man suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

At least seven police cars arrived on the scene in addition to an ambulance and one fire truck.

Fennelly said the incident remains under investigation and that the other man and woman involved in the earlier incident on West 10th Street were interviewed and released. Neither was injured.
