100 years ago: Three arrested at train station on suspicion of stealing landlady’s goods

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 9, 1916:

  • “Arthur Wilson, Belle Johnson and Hattie Wilson were arrested yesterday afternoon on the charge of larceny just as they were about to leave Lawrence on the Santa Fe train No. 14. They were turned over to the county authorities. The three people arrested had been rooming at the home of Mrs. Jackson in the 1200 block on New Jersey street. Mrs. Jackson left her home yesterday afternoon and when she had gone the trio packed up some of her belongings in suitcases and started for the Santa Fe station. Pete McGee, another roomer at the house, trailed them down to the station. From there he called the police station and told his suspicions, saying that the three were about to board a train for Kansas City.”
  • “Unless a special jury panel is drawn, the criminal docket of the May term of court is ended. Two gambling cases yet remain to be tried…. When court opened this morning after a recess since Friday, civil actions came to trial. The action which was before the court this morning was that of Ledeboer against the Lawrence Street Railway company. Mr. Ledeboer is asking damages because, according to allegations which are made, a street car cut the hose of the fire company while his house was burning. The plaintiff alleges that the total loss of his property was due to this cause. The house was located at the corner of Delaware and Thirteenth street. The entire morning session of the court was occupied with the hearing of evidence introduced by the plaintiff.”
  • “Those who attended the recital at the Presbyterian church Saturday evening given by Miss Marie Kaiser, were both surprised and delighted. Miss Kaiser proved herself to be a soprano of unusual excellence and to have a charm of manner that is indescribable. The recital was given to show the quality of the Edison phonograph and no better manner could have been chosen to introduce the Edison to the people of Lawrence. A number of records made by Miss Kaiser were reproduced and she sang with the instrument, sang parts and let the instrument sing part or sang the alto to her own soprano, the latter being recreated by the phonograph.”
  • “The announcement of the coming of the 200 business men from St. Louis this week and plans for their entertainment while in Lawrence were made at the meeting of the Merchants and Farmers’ Association today. The St. Louis business men will arrive in Lawrence Saturday, May 13, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. They will be taken for a twenty-minute ride over the city and probably out to Haskell. They will then be given an opportunity to use the remaining hour of their stay in Lawrence visiting the local merchants in their place of business. The St. Louis business men will entertain as well as be entertained while in Lawrence. They carry with them a ‘sales managers’ band.’ This organization will play in some place in Lawrence.” “President Wilson has called out the militia of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, to deal with the border situation…. While [cabinet] members admitted that there were serious possibilities in the situation most of them took the view that the difficulties would be smoothed out.”
