One man hospitalized after early-morning bicycle crash

One man was hospitalized after crashing his bicycle into another man early Friday morning, police said.

At 12:32 a.m. the cyclist, 27, was eastbound in the 500 block of West 14th Street when another man walked into the sidewalk from between two illegally parked cars, said Lawrence Police Officer Drew Fennelly. The cyclist hit the man and “tumbled over his handle bars onto the pavement,” he said.

Nearby officers responded to the scene, Fennelly said, and they found the cyclist unconscious, with no helmet and with “obvious injuries to the head.”

The cyclist regained consciousness before emergency medical responders arrived on the scene, Fennelly said. Because of the serious nature of his injuries, a helicopter was requested to transport him to an area hospital.

The cyclist was listed in stable condition with a head injury around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, Fennelly said. The second man involved in the accident was not injured.

Further information was not immediately available.
