Fix-It Chick: Pick the right paint finish for your projects

The finish of the paint determines its durability and its washability.

The amount of light reflected or absorbed by any painted surface is determined by the finish or sheen of the paint. The reflection of light changes the perception of color, and the finish of the paint determines its durability and its washability. With a little know-how it is easy to choose the right finish for any paint project.

Flat

Choose flat finish paint for imperfect surfaces, ceilings and low traffic areas.

Flat finish paint is the least expensive of all sheens.

Its inability to reflect light camouflages many surface imperfections. Touch-ups are a breeze, as the lack of light reflection makes newly painted spots more likely to match previously painted areas.

Flat finishes are soft and virtually unwashable. Chose flat finishes for surfaces that are less likely to be touched, such as ceilings and home exteriors.

Satin

Satin sheens are the next best thing to flat finishes. Satin paint look like a flat finish from the front, but a sideways glance will show a little shine. Satin finishes are more washable than flat finishes, but not as washable as shinier paints.

The slight shine of a satin paint will show some imperfections, but for the most part, satin is a good choice for higher traffic areas with less than perfect surfaces.

Choose satin finishes for bedrooms, living rooms and small areas where a little bit of light reflection may help to brighten the room.

Satin is a great choice for exterior surfaces, as it won’t reflect the sunlight as much as semi-gloss, but its harder surface will discourage dirt and debris from sticking to the painted surface.

Eggshell

Eggshell finishes combine the benefits of semi-gloss finishes with the benefits of a flat finish, making them the perfect choice for any room in the house.

Choose eggshell finishes for areas where a low-luster paint that is highly washable and durable is desired.

Eggshell finishes reflect very little light, but they are more likely to absorb stains.

Avoid using eggshell finishes on furniture or exterior surfaces.

Semi-gloss, high gloss

Semi-gloss and high gloss finishes are the toughest, most durable finishes on the market.

Their reflection of light will highlight surface imperfections, but sometimes this can be beneficial.

Semi-gloss and gloss paints are highly washable and can increase the intensity and brightness of any room.

Choose semi-gloss paints for kitchens, bathrooms, wood trim, windows, doors and furniture.
