Lawrence police planning third DUI saturation patrol of the year

For the third time this year the Lawrence Police Department will increase patrols to check for impaired drivers.

Between 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday the department will conduct a DUI saturation patrol, said Lawrence Police Sgt. Amy Rhoads.

Extra officers will patrol the town “specifically looking for motorists who exhibit signs of impaired driving and other traffic violations,” Rhoads said.

The extra police presence for the patrol is funded through the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The department plans a total of seven such saturation patrols this year, Rhoads said.

The department’s most recent patrol took place in early May, and one person was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated, Rhoads said. In all, around 25 traffic stops were conducted, several of which resulted in traffic citations.

The police department does not disclose the location of the patrols.
