The United Way of Douglas County brings community resources together to support a better life for residents by focusing on improvements in health, education, and financial stability.

The United Way is looking for volunteers interested in making an impact on educational needs of local school children by assisting with the communitywide Back2School project. Donations have been collected, sorted, and counted. Volunteers are needed to distribute the stuffed backpacks to qualifying families of The Ballard Community Center, ECKAN, The Salvation Army, and Penn House, on Aug. 10, 11 and 12, at the former Borders building.

A group of volunteers is also needed on the afternoon of Aug. 12 to put away 30 tables, tidy up the facility, and transport unused supplies to the United Way building. This is a great opportunity for business groups, civic groups, book clubs, groups of friends, or families.

Coordinate volunteers for seniors

Douglas County Senior Services, Inc., is committed to promoting quality of life for older citizens, developing community partnerships, providing innovative programs and services, and serving as a focal point of comprehensive services for older citizens.

DCSS is looking for a volunteer to serve as a Coordinator of Volunteers. Tasks include recruiting, screening, scheduling, tracking, and evaluating volunteers for Douglas County Seniors Services. Assist Just Food

Just Food and its partners fight hunger in our community by increasing the availability of a variety of foods while reducing waste from discarded food.

Just Food is looking for volunteers to assist in the warehouse. Tasks include weighing and recording incoming goods, helping restock shelves/coolers in the pantry and warehouse, and helping inventory and prepare goods. Please contact operations@justfoodks.org for more information.

Opportunities at Willow

The Willow Domestic Violence Center provides safe shelter, advocacy, and hope for survivors of domestic and family violence in Douglas, Franklin and Jefferson counties.

The Willow has many ongoing volunteer opportunities including administrative office assistant, shelter advocate, community educator, community advocate, marketing and publicity, court advocate, special events and projects, child activities assistant, and more.

Be an animal ambassador

The Lawrence Humane Society needs volunteers to assist with their Adoption Ambassador program.

Adoption Ambassadors care for an animal in their own home and receive training on strategies and resources to promote the animal for adoption and process the adoption on behalf of Lawrence Humane Society.

Help Salvation Army feeding program
