Baldwin school board votes to maintain current year fee schedule

The Baldwin school board agreed to give district parents a break should the state stay true to its promise.

The board at its Monday meeting approved a 2016-2017 fee schedule that maintains fees at current year levels. However, the board did reserve the right to revisit fees should the state decrease the level of 2016-2017 funding from what is now anticipated.

The board has increased or introduced fees in recent years for such things as bus transportation, activities, milk and all-day kindergarten as the level of state classroom funding has decreased or been frozen, as is the case for the current year. Superintendent Paul Dorathy said the board understood the hardship fees could place on families when they are due in the fall.

The board also tweaked its list of capital improvements in the wake of a decision earlier this month to address this summer the failing roof on the Baldwin Elementary School Intermediate Center. That work is estimated to cost from $180,000 to $370,000.

The board agreed to defer the planned installation of fencing around the soccer field and track north of the Baldwin High School parking lot and the replacement of bleachers in the Baldwin Junior High School Gym, Dorathy said.

The board did decide to go ahead with the purchase of a new bus slated for this year and to maintain the regular replacement rotation of furniture, flooring and equipment, Dorathy said.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a $150,000 technology purchase of Apple Computers. Dorathy said the purchase will be for the replacement of desktops and laptops, although iPad purchases would replace some of the computers.

• Agreed with a rewrite of the district’s strategic plan, which includes new language about the responsible use of resources, student exposure to nonacademic skills, and the recruitment and retention of quality teachers.
