Former KU graduate teaching assistant sentenced to 18 years for sex crimes

A Lawrence man, 38, has been sentenced to 18 years after pleading no contest to attempted rape and attempted aggravated criminal sodomy, according to a press release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s office.

Orion Mark Graf, a former Kansas University graduate teaching assistant, was originally charged in June 2014 with two counts of rape while the victim was incapable of giving consent, one count of aggravated assault and one count of felony criminal threat, the Journal-World has reported.

Graf was sentenced Wednesday in the Division Two courtroom of Judge Sally D. Pokorny, following his May 12, 2015, no contest plea, according to the release. The release also says the “plea negotiations were done in close consultation and with the input of the victim of the crime.”

Graf was under investigation for two counts of breach of privacy in 2014 after secretly videotaping people in dressing rooms in downtown Lawrence. That was how investigators found photos of an 18-year-old female victim unconscious in “various states of undress and sexual contact,” according to the release.

After he is released, Graf faces 36 months of post-release supervision and lifetime registration as a sex offender, according to the release.
