New city manager to be announced ‘very soon,’ mayor says

Lawrence city manager candidates, from left: Roderick “Rod” Bremby of Glastonbury, Conn., Cheryl Harrison-Lee of Gardner, Kan., and Thomas “Tom” Markus of Iowa City, Iowa.

Nearly one month after the City Commission selected the new city manager, Lawrence still does not know who he or she is.

But the public will know “very soon,” Mayor Mike Amyx said Tuesday.

After a half-hour closed executive session at the end of Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, Amyx said negotiations with the person selected “have been very productive.”

“I think we’re close,” Amyx said when asked whether negotiations had been finalized. “Negotiations have gone very well.”

Amyx confirmed that the city was negotiating with the same candidate commissioners selected Dec. 18.

He would not say specifically when an announcement would be made or more about the duration of the negotiations.

The three finalists for the position were: Rod Bremby, of Glastonbury, Conn.; Cheryl Harrison-Lee, of Gardner; and Tom Markus, of Iowa City, Iowa.

Bremby, 55, currently works as a commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Social Services; Harrison-Lee, 53, is the city administrator of Gardner; and Tom Markus, 64, is city manager of Iowa City.
