100 years ago: New lighting system to dazzle downtown

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 9, 1916:

“The new white way may blaze out on the streets of Lawrence at the end of another month if the weather is such that concrete work can be done with a fair degree of continuity. The last of the material to be used in the construction of the white way has arrived in Lawrence…. In anticipation of the new system that is soon to be installed, the local lighting company had workmen busy on Massachusetts street this afternoon taking down the lines of wires between trolley poles which have supplied a small addition to the regular street lights through the holiday periods and on festive occasions in recent years. The wires for the new system will be laid underground along the edge of the sidewalks on Massachusetts street…. The installation of the system will be made by the Lawrence Railway & Light company. By an agreement which the city entered into at the time the contract was awarded, the labor of city prisoners will be used to some extent in the construction work.”

“The war relief work of the Lawrence women is rapidly swinging into shape. The twenty women who worked at the Unitarian church yesterday afternoon were able to turn out more finished work than on any previous afternoon. Three hundred gauze sponges were folded and packed and thirteen bandages rolled, in addition to the cutting of old linens into pieces for making wipes of various sizes…. Several church societies have volunteered to make hospital supplies, and these will begin work this week upon fracture bandages and body binders made mostly from old materials. The finished articles will be sterilized by members of the water survey laboratories at the University, and will be ready for immediate use when shipped from Lawrence. Collection of clothing and old linens was carried on all day yesterday, six motor cars gathering the materials. This will be continued all of this week.”

“To show Lawrence to the people of the state in the moving picture show is a plan now before the Merchants and Farmers association for consideration…. The interesting streets of Lawrence, industries and activities of the city, beautiful residences, the University, schools, and the gatherings such as the editors’ meeting in the spring, the Merchants’ Short Course and other meetings of this nature will be photographed for the movies if the plan is put in operation.”

“December was a month of activity for the Social Service League according to a report given at a meeting of the league yesterday. Red Cross stamps amounting to $50 were sold, and the visiting nurse, Miss B. Mae Patterson, rendered nursing services to 206 persons. Three patients were treated in the hospital. Nine children were supplied with shoes, and sixty-three children were given other clothing. The League helped in the distribution of Christmas dinners and grocery for future needs were collected.”

“The scene of activity on the river where the Missouri Valley bridge company is constructing the new concrete bridge over the Kaw will be further heightened soon by the building of the interurban spur which will carry the building material over the fill to where the bridge work is in progress. The interurban officials informed the city engineer Saturday that they were ready to begin the construction of the spur immediately and made a request for information concerning the widening of Bridge street.”
