South Dakota man faces felony charges in Lawrence, including attempted second-degree murder

A Sioux Falls, S.D., man is accused of kidnapping another man, stabbing him in the chest and robbing him of drugs and personal possessions while in Lawrence.

Lavern Reffitt, 22, was arrested Tuesday at the Douglas County Jail. He faces felony charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery, according to a criminal complaint filed in Douglas County District Court.

On Jan. 25, 2015, Reffitt forcibly or by threat or deception confined a Missouri man and stabbed him in the chest with the intent to commit murder, the complaint says. He is also accused of taking the victim’s clothes, shoes, wallet, drugs and a knife.

A case against Reffitt was filed on Feb. 3, 2015, said Cheryl Wright Kunard, assistant to the Douglas County district attorney. At that time he was in the custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections for felony convictions of armed robbery and possession of a controlled substance.

As a part of the Interstate Agreement on Detainers, extradition was waived and Reffitt was transferred to the Douglas County Jail, Wright Kunard said. Once his case is completed he will be returned to the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Reffitt is currently being held without bond. He is scheduled to be in court for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. Monday.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said in an email Thursday that Reffitt’s booking photo is “not required to be disclosed under the Kansas Open Records Act.” The Missouri Department of corrections, however, provided a photo.
