Douglas County Commission to consider conditional-use permit for soccer complex

Site plan for Calcio Village soccer complex near N 1300 and E 1750 roads, created by Adams Architects.

The Douglas County Commission on Wednesday will consider a conditional-use permit for a multifield soccer complex proposed for a site just southeast of Lawrence.

To allow greater opportunity for public comment on the permit, the County Commission has delayed the start of its regular weekly meeting two hours to 6 p.m. Last month, the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission voted 9-0 to recommend that the Douglas County Commission approve a conditional-use permit for what is to be called Calcio Village. The soccer complex is to be built on 80 acres at the northeast corner of North 1300 Road and East 1750 Road.

The proposal would locate five grass fields, a parking lot, storage building and facilities for concessions and restrooms on the site. A pond to collect water for irrigation is also planned.

The Planning Commission did recommend that field lighting at the complex not be used after 10 p.m., that field lights be equipped with shields and visors to reduce glare and that the complex not open for training or games until North 1300 Road and East 1750 Road are restored to the condition they were in before work started on the South Lawrence Trafficway. The applicant, Jambars Futbal Inc., has filed a revised plan complying with the light-shielding and road conditions.

The County Commission also will consider:

• Awarding a bid for replacement of a 79-year-old bridge over Coal Creek on Route 458 about one-third of a mile east of the Route 1055 intersection.

• A contract to replace the deck of a bridge over Washington Creek on Route 1039 just south of Lone Star Lake.

• Revisions to the county personnel policies, which include a provision to create a longevity pay schedule.

The Douglas County Commission generally meets at 4 p.m. each Wednesday at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St. A full meeting agenda is available online at douglascountyks.org.
