Flash flood watch and severe thunderstorm warning issued for Douglas County

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northwest Douglas County until 7:15 p.m. At 6:28 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was reported at Cardondale moving northeast at 30 mph. There is a chance of ping pong sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts with the storm.

According to the National Weather Service, Clinton, Lecompton, Lone Star and southwestern Lawrence are in the path of the storm.

Earlier, the National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for Douglas County from 7 p.m. Wednesday through 7 a.m. Thursday. It has also issued a severe thunderstorm watch from 4:45 p.m. until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The watch includes portions of east-central and northeast Kansas, including the Lawrence area, as a front moves through the region with the possibility of widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to sudden flooding.
