Lions, Firebirds make most of opportunity

LHS sophomore Carson Jumping Eagle hands off to junior Garrett Prescott in the boys 4 X 800-meter relay during the LHS Invitational track meet at LHS on Wednesday, April 20, 2016.

Sometimes competing with less pressure brings out the best in track and field athletes.

Look no further than Lawrence High junior Lexi Anglin, who set a personal record in the javelin on Wednesday and picked up a win in the discus. Anglin topped her old mark in the javelin by four feet.

Anglin was one of the many athletes who set personal records at the LHS Invitational, also known as the “Little KU Relays.” The meet was for all of the athletes who didn’t qualify for this weekend’s Kansas Relays.

“Usually I fall in the middle or somewhere right there,” Anglin said of winning two events. “It feels great today.”

Lawrence’s girls track and field team placed second in the team standings, and the boys were third. Free State High’s girls were fifth, and the boys took fourth.

Without some of the top throwers, Anglin became one of the top seeds in each event. She won the javelin with a throw of 108 feet, 9 inches. Lawrence’s Baylee Unruh was runner-up, and Free State’s Brooke Culbertson finished third.

In the discus, Anglin won with a throw of 94-8, edging teammate Kedra Green by four inches. Anglin said it helped that she had to rush in between events, giving her little time to think before her throws.

“This is a great opportunity for kids who are perpetually (junior-varsity) or on the fringe of being varsity to come out and shine,” Lawrence coach Jack Hood said.

Along with Anglin, the Lions picked up big days from Kaitlen White (300 hurdles champ) and Josie Hickerson (pole vault runner-up).

For the FSHS girls team, Caylee Irving won in the shot put, Reganne Young was second in the long jump and Lily Begeman was third in the 400 meters.

It was also a banner day for Free State freshman Caitlin McAndrew-Beckham, who set personal records in the 100 and 300 hurdles and matched her best mark in the long jump. She took fourth place in all three events.

“It’s really cool,” McAndrew-Beckham said. “It’s a cool experience that I get to be among the top people on JV as a freshman.”

The LHS boys were led by James Reeder, who took first in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Jalen Atkinson was runner-up in the long jump and triple jump, and Malachi Starr took second place in the 200-meter dash.

Hunter Krom and BJ Murray added second-place finishes in the javelin and shot put, respectively.

“There wasn’t as much competition as I thought,” said Reeder, who set a personal record in the 300 hurdles (43.73). “It’s completely different.”

Free State’s boys had wins in the field from Sam Hambleton (discus) and Cameron Hodge (pole vault).

On the track, Peter Rupnicki was second in the 100-meter dash, just ahead of teammates Zach Wilson and Keenan Garber. Rupnicki was fourth in the 200.

Tanner Cobb was third in the long jump, fourth in the 400 and seventh in the 200. He set a personal record in the long jump (18-9.5).

“I was pretty happy, but I think I can prove a little bit more,” Cobb said.

Of course, some of the athletes enjoy facing the top competitors, who will compete at the Kansas Relays, because it’s a chance to push themselves. But for one day, they didn’t mind becoming the top competitors at their down-sized meet.

“They get a chance to compete,” Hood said. “Without the KU Relay kids in the meet, it’s a little easier for them to score points. It really gives them a sense that they are doing something and feel good. If you watched the kids’ faces, they had a great time today.”

The high school portion of the Kansas Relays begins at 8 a.m. Friday at Rock Chalk Park.
