Weekend Guide: Library book sale; Kaw Valley Quilt Show; KU powwow; Tom Neilson
From left, Caroline Dykes, a senior at LHS and a volunteer at the Lawrence Public Library, pushes out a rack of books along with Tom Hoffman, chairman of the book committee of the Friends of the Library, in preparation for the Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale Thursday afternoon, March 31, 2016. Thursday evening, the book sale is open to members only. It opens to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and continues 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the library, 707 Vermont St., at the Seventh and Kentucky streets entrance.
On the roster this weekend: good times for quilters and quilt enthusiasts, dancing and Native American culture at the Lied Center, politically and socially conscious tunes for turbulent times, and books. Lots and lots of books.
Friends of the Lawrence Public Library Spring Book Sale
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St.
Freshen up your bookshelf this weekend without spending too much green (are you noticing a theme here?) at the Friends’ springtime sale, located on the library’s Kentucky Street entrance.
This year’s low-priced selection includes everything from “mystery and international fiction, to cookbooks and graphic novels,” the proceeds of which all go toward funding library programs.
Kaw Valley Quilt Show
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Crown Toyota, 3430 Iowa St.
The storied Kaw Valley Quilters Guild is once again hosting its annual showcase of quilts and textile arts.
Guild members’ work will be displayed, with smaller creations in a silent auction benefiting local charities as well as larger exhibited pieces made by individuals or groups of quilters.
Guests can vote for their favorite quilt, and shop for “treasures” in the Quilters Attic or among the many vendors.
KU Powwow & Indigenous Dance and Culture Festival
11 a.m. Saturday, Lied Center, 1600 Stewart Drive
If you’ve never been to a powwow, this one might be worth venturing out for.
Presented by First Nations Student Association of KU, the one-day festival includes dance performances both in the morning and evening, workshops (among them beading, hand drum making, quill work, indigenous visual art, tribal songs and moccasin making) from 1:30 to 6 p.m. and indigenous film screenings starting at 7:30 p.m.
(If that rundown isn’t enough to hook you, there will also be authentic native foods available for purchase.)
The event is free, open to the public, and hosted in partnership with the Lied Center, Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, Spencer Museum of Art, KU Office of Diversity and Equity, and the KU Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Tom Neilson, Satire and Social Comedy
7 p.m. Sunday, Unitarian Fellowship of Lawrence, 1263 North 1100 Road
Award-winning folk musician Tom Neilson is bringing his signature blend of satire and song to Lawrence this Sunday.
The well-traveled troubadour spent time with the Peace Corps — and notably, as a negotiator for the United Nations — before his nomination for the Nelson Mandela Prize in 2015. Awarded every five years by the UN, the prize recognizes the achievements of those who dedicate their lives to the service of humanity.
Tickets (donations) cost $15, and can be purchased at www.uufl.net/concerts or at the door.
