40 years ago: Museum artifacts recovered after burglar arrest

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 24, 1975:

Michael T. Deutsch, 36, La Conner, Virginia, was being held in the Douglas County jail on a Washington burglary. Deutsch, who was wanted for the burglary, and a juvenile girl had been arrested Sunday night at the East Lawrence turnpike exit after sharp-eyed Turnpike Trooper Bill Brockman had spotted the two at a Topeka rest stop. Brockman, another trooper, and KBI Agent Jim Woods had spent Monday preparing a large inventory list of items found in Deutsch’s vehicle, all of which appeared to be stolen items from the Orcas Historical Society Museum, East Sound, Washington. In Deutsch’s 1965 Oldsmobile the officers discovered at least an estimated $25,000 in Native American artifacts, including pottery, blankets, and religious relics. Many items were still unaccounted for, according to a list provided by the museum. Brockman said the two had told him they had sold several items en route from Portland, Oregon, to Kansas.
