Lawrence to host Saturday festival welcoming cyclists to South Park

Lawrence’s convention and visitors bureau, eXplore Lawrence, is holding a public festival to welcome about 1,800 cyclists with Bike MS: Kansas City Ride who will stop Saturday at South Park.

The ride, which is a fundraiser for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, starts at the Garmin headquarters building in Olathe. Cyclists will stop overnight in Lawrence, where they’ll either camp in South Park or catch shuttles to a hotel.

The Gears & Grooves Festival will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and run until about 10 p.m., said Bob Sanner, with eXplore Lawrence.

The festival includes live music, children’s activities, food from Ingredient and Boulevard beer.

The section of Massachusetts Street from North Park to South Park streets will be closed to traffic from about 5 a.m. Saturday through Sunday morning.

Cyclists will receive a pancake breakfast at South Park early Sunday morning and most will be headed back to Olathe by 8 a.m., Sanner said.
