Texas prep Fox to visit for Late Night

Kansas University basketball recruiting.

De’Aaron Fox, a 6-foot-3 senior point guard from Cypress Lakes High in Katy, Texas, will attend the Oct. 9 Late Night in the Phog as part of an official recruiting visit to Kansas University.

Rivals.com’s No. 5-rated player in the Class of 2016 has a final list of KU, Kentucky, Arizona, Louisville, LSU, North Carolina State and North Carolina.

Other top seniors to attend Late Night: No. 2-ranked Harry Giles, 6-10 from Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia; No. 6 Malik Monk, 6-4 from Bentonville (Arkansas) High; and No. 16 Marques Bolden, 6-10 from DeSoto (Texas) High.

Recruiting analyst Evan Daniels says Fox will visit LSU on Sept. 19, Louisville on Sept. 26 and Kentucky on Oct. 17. He has yet to decide on his fifth visit.

Hall of Fame chatter: Kentucky’s John Calipari will be the seventh active college basketball coach to be inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The current coaches in the Hall are: Larry Brown, Roy Williams, Rick Pitino, Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Chris Mullin, who made it as a player.

What other college coaches are likely to soon join former KU coaches Brown and Williams and 56-year-old former KU grad assistant Calipari in the Hall?

The Sporting News’ Mike DeCourcy in June wrote that Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo are a “sure thing.” He lists KU’s Bill Self and former Florida coach/current OKC Thunder boss Billy Donovan “a safe bet.”

“We tend to look first at national accomplishments when evaluating a Hall of Fame candidate and Self has enough of that, including his improbable Elite Eight run at Tulsa and a 37-16 NCAA Tournament record — to make the necessary impression, but the Jayhawks’ run of consecutive Big 12 Conference championships is going to make a difference as well,” writes DeCourcy. “KU is now at 11 league titles in a row … Self has won regular season championships in 83 percent of the seasons his teams competed in a conference. That is incredible.”

KU also has won a national title and competed in two Final Fours under Self, beginning his 13th year at KU.

Award presentation Thursday: Self on Thursday night will be awarded the 2015 Mannie Jackson — Basketball Human Spirit Award at the Reunion Dinner on the Hall of Fame’s Center Court in Massachusetts.

Others to receive the honor: Former Reebok CEO Paul Fireman and 14-year NBA veteran Steve Smith.

According to the Hall, “Winners of the Mannie Jackson — Basketball Human Spirit Award exhibit qualities such as striving to improve the community, making a commitment to others, hard work and embracing the core values of the game. Beyond the game, award winners must reflect the values of Mannie Jackson’s life-long mission to overcome obstacles and challenge the status quo, while taking responsibility for his or her actions and seeking the highest standard of excellence.”

Self is being cited for his and wife Cindy’s work with their Assists Foundation, which, since 2006, has served a variety of youth initiatives in Lawrence and the surrounding area. Assists has helped fund programs such as Kansas Action for Healthy Kids, Lawrence Public Library, Boys and Girls Clubs of Lawrence, Kansas Youth Empowerment Academy, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas and Head Start of Lawrence. The Assists Foundation has also helped create a program called “Winning Attitudes for Life” within the school system for elementary through high school students. It is designed to promote healthy living, physical fitness, positive well-being and self respect. It is to help students develop their leadership, team building, decision-making and communication skills.

White in Class of 2015: Former KU and Boston Celtics guard Jo Jo White will be inducted in the Hall Friday with Calipari, Dick Bavetta, Louis Dampier, Lindsay Gaze, Spencer Haywood, Tom Heinsohn, John Isaacs, Lisa Leslie, Dikembe Mutombo and George Raveling.
