40 years ago: Visitor arrested for pot possession at Lawrence hotel

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 2, 1975:

  • A Michigan man was arrested by Lawrence police this weekend for illegal possession of marijuana. The man, who was arrested in his motel room at the Holiday Inn, 23rd and Iowa, had been hoping to sell his wares at $400 a pound. A hotel security officer had spotted a van in the parking lot that “smelled of marijuana” and had “leaves and stems sticking out the back,” according to a police brief published today. Police said they then searched the van with the man’s permission and found 300 pounds of freshly-cut marijuana.
  • Movies showing in Lawrence theaters this week included “The Return of the Pink Panther,” “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” “Rollerball,” and “Jaws.” Those preferring live theater could visit the University of Kansas, where actors were performing William Saroyan’s “The Time of Your Life.”
