Driver critically injured in Jefferson County crash dies

A 24-year-old man injured Monday in a single-vehicle accident in Jefferson County died early Tuesday morning as a result of his injuries.

Kyle Christopher Inscho was taken to the Kansas University Hospital via air ambulance after his vehicle left U.S. Highway 59, rolled over and caught on fire, the Journal-World reported Monday morning.

According to Jeremy Rodecap, fire chief for Jefferson County Fire District No. 3, the accident was near 54th Street on U.S. 59, about 5 miles south of Oskaloosa.

Candy Helms, a longtime friend of Inscho’s mother, Merridee Helm-Summerville, said Inscho was a “very well-liked kid.”

Inscho graduated from Oskaloosa High School and was working as a heavy machine operator, and was also a mechanic.

“He was a positive person; he loved people; he loved helping people,” Helms said.

Inscho loved fishing, hunting, motor sports, mudding, “and his mother,” Helms said.

He is survived by four brothers and four sisters, his mother, father and stepfather among other relatives, Helms said.

“From what we’re understanding, he may have (fallen) asleep at the wheel, and he went off an embankment and hit a tree,” Helms said. “… It was really bad.”

Helms said she plans to start a GoFundMe page to help the family pay for funeral expenses.

“The family really does need the help, and I don’t know anything else that I could do for them,” Helms said. “I’m just trying to be there for them and trying to get them at least a decent service for their son.”

Helms said the family plans to make arrangements with Barnett Family Funeral Home in Oskaloosa.
