40 years ago: Local motorist accidentally drives off end of 23rd Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 11, 1975:

  • Three persons had been injured on a recent Saturday night when their car had run off the end of 23rd Street at Drag Strip Road, about two miles west of 23rd and Iowa. The driver had suffered cuts and a broken tooth, while the two passengers were treated for cuts and abrasions. Douglas County Sheriff’s officers said the driver had apparently failed to negotiate the turn while driving westbound on 23rd. The driver had told officers he could not remember what happened after he applied the brakes.
  • In Kansas City, officials said this week they believed striking firefighters were responsible for some of the 217 blazes which had erupted since firefighters had walked off their jobs in a recent pay dispute. Fire Director Frank Spink said there were “strong indications that arson was involved in six fires” over the weekend, and Kansas City police had reported one firebombing Sunday night.
