40 years ago: Human ‘ingredients’ attend annual Salad Bowl party

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 10, 1975:

A party held on a recent weekend at Lawrence’s Central Park [now Buford Watson park, informally known as the “train park”] had resulted in a gathering of what looked like the ingredients for a delicious lunch. The Fourth Annual Salad Bowl, in which participants dressed up as their favorite veggies or other foods, had originated four years earlier among friends of Diana Dunkley and Emily Wellman, who had been inspired by the park’s similarity to a large bowl. The event had grown each year until this week’s gathering had drawn more than 100 participants. Among those present were a large carrot, an ear of corn, a leafy artichoke, and a bunch of grapes. Winning praise from attendees was a group of seven people who wore long brown underwear in their attempt to portray link sausages. “They all laid down in a circle like they were in a pan and went s-s-s-s-s,” one witness said. “Then two people dressed as a fork and spoon came along and turned them over.”
