40 years ago: Linwood student battles school authorities in shaving dispute

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Oct. 9, 1975:

The Lawrence chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union this week entered the case of a former Linwood High School senior who had been expelled in September for refusing to shave his mustache. Greg Thomas, 17, had been suspended from school shortly after classes had begun this fall — and then formally expelled — for violating the school dress code which called for clean-shaven faces. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Shores, Linwood, had supported his decision. “He’s too young to shave,” Mr. Shores had opined. Greg was now attending Lawrence High School and was expected to have graduated by the time the case was finally decided, but ACLU communication director Karen Blank said it would still be a relevant decision because the expulsion would be a permanent part of Greg’s record. Greg’s father said he was eager to pursue the issue into the courts. “Somebody has got to stop those school board members,” he said. “This is ridiculous.”
