Brownback: Kansas has ‘good shot’ at meeting revenue targets

November 10, 2015

— Gov. Sam Brownback says Kansas has "a good shot" at making its new revenue projections and avoiding a deficit in its current budget.

Brownback told reporters Monday that he's hoping a new fiscal forecast will hold and, "We'll be in fine shape."

University economists, legislative researchers and officials in Brownback's administration issued the new forecast Friday. It slashed $354 million from projections for state revenues from now through June 2017.

Brownback's budget director immediately announced $124 million in adjustments to the current budget to prevent a deficit.

Legislative researchers now project cash reserves of less than $6 million at the end of June 2016.

When a reporter noted that it's not much of a cushion, Brownback said, "I think we've got a good shot of being able to make that."

A good shot? Is he talking of his brother or the budget? I reckon it doesn't matter as neither is worth a hoot. He robs more money from the highway fund and children services and then tells us we have a good shot at being fine? Delusional to the end.

This should prove to every idiot that voted for Brownscum, once and for all, just how stupid he is, and by proxy how stupid they are for their votes in the first place. Way to go, morons.

Won't be long before Sam can drown Kansas government in the bathtub, just like his Masters want him to do.

Tyler Palmer 1 year, 10 months ago

Wow. Brownback is pretty detached from reality.

"We'll be in fine shape." - are you kidding me? Having to sweep money that was dedicated to specific programs into the general fund, not make payments into the state pension system (again), and other accounting tricks does not seem like we're in "fine shape". If it happened once, maybe there was a one-time glitch, but this has been happening year after year. Pretty clear indicator that huge mistakes have been made that need to be corrected.

Kansas Legislature, Wake up! Stop cowering away from Brownback and his failed policies and lead. Pass sensible and responsible budgets and taxes.

I've also got a good shot at winning the lottery. I think I'll quit my job and start buying mansions.

"Brownback's budget director immediately announced $124 million in adjustments to the current budget to prevent a deficit."

What budget adjustments might those be? This is a pretty evasive statement regarding a tidy sum of money. Were there employees laid off? What services are cut?

Looking at these posts so far, I haven't seen this much hope for Brownback failure since Limbaugh said he hoped Obama fails.

David Carson 1 year, 10 months ago

Brownback already failed, that is indisputable. What's your point?

Barb Gordon 1 year, 10 months ago

Nope. Not a lot of hope in this thread. Believe you me, we'd really rather that Emperor Brownback's new clothes were really as fantastic as his claims. We're tired of seeing his rear end.

Carol Bowen 1 year, 10 months ago

Governor Brownback is an ideologist. He is holding true to his belief of a small government with very few, if any, services. He probably thinks that the results, so far, are good, and if we hang on long enough, we will prosper. There are quite a few leaders reading this play book. Not everyone is a centrist or to the left on political thought.

What world is he living in??? It's sure not the same one I'm in.

And when are the legislators going to have the balls to do what is right for the state of Kansas and to hell with Sam's threat of a veto?

Just in time for the holidays, PAYOLA RECORDS has licensed AKOMA* to remarket last year's most promising Kansas record: Sam The Sham & The SayNOs' "I Shot The Adrenaline.” AKOMA technicians have dubbed in the backing vocalists so familiar to the impoverished & disabled (legless only, no one with difficulty voting on a computer) of Kansas: de KOCHROCHETTES.

AKOMA* => Avoiding the Kansas Open Meetings Act, as in: "I did not have (a meeting &/or sex) with . . . . . "

The Sham's lucrative contract with PAYOLA RECORDS has bankrolled Brownback's Atlas of Road Maps To Nowhere, an experimental genre of undelivered promises evoking mournful wails from even the most ardent listeners.

Past & present members of The SayNOs backing Sham with their tuneful lyrics include:

a balding RonE, featuring "My Learning Quest Kiddies Are Too Young to be Mine"

Outdoors DJ Robbin' J's "Lesser Prairie Chicken Sues" with that catchy line "my scientists are better than your scientists (at disappearing species)"

NickyJ's enigmatic figurative composition "My Numbers Don't Add Up (to nuthin' much)"

Former AP sideman, Jay Milburn's "You CAN Make This Stuff Up"

Mikey King's "Where Did Those KTA Dollars Go?"

LG "Jeff" C's myth-busting tour-de-force "How Many Times Can I Bail Sham Out?"

Jimmy Clark's jiving "Audit Cost So Much To Repeal KPERS?"

Kari B's "You're Only As Old & Disabled As We Deem"

Jackie Mac's "I Can See Clearly Now, The NBAF Dying Cow"

Pat G's "Creationist Job Blues (Ridin' My Dino For Reggie J"

RayR's "Faith-based Ministry Prison Warden Blues"

Bobbie Moser's "(That Coal) Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" & "Fa la la la la Ogallala"

P Gilmore's "Oh That Sam (He Can Sham The Seniors Out Of Medicare)"

He needs to stop making so many trips to Colorado, the fog is making him delusional.

Nothing but lies and deceit from the Brownback administration.

Keep lowering the predictions and stealing funds from other accounts to meet shortfalls, what a brilliant plan. And this is what the nutcases who continually vote for anyone with an R after their name on the ballot want. After all that's what their entire family have always done, no common sense and intelligence required.

Richard Heckler 1 year, 10 months ago

This party of phony republicans are committed to ALEC/Koch dollars with Sam as the administrator for the Kansas takeover. Yes there is the Wisconsin takeover, the Michigan takeover, the Ohio takeover, the North Carolina takeover etc etc etc and each state has their own administrator in the respective governors mansion.

In order for this overthrow to be successful there must be substantial cover up exercises in place.

Patrick Pritchard 1 year, 10 months ago

It is really sad......sometimes people just can't face the truth......your plan didn't work Sam!

Steve King 1 year, 10 months ago

They just bumped up the Unemployment tax fund contrabution rate again. The base was $8,000. In January it went to $12,000. I just recieved notice it is now $14,000. If the sun is shining in Kansas, lots of new jobs around the corner, why have they nearly doubled the Unemployment tax in the last year? Maybe they know the crash is coming or they are building up a new account to tap?

Carol Bowen 1 year, 10 months ago

Or, the state needs another slush fund.

Richard Heckler 1 year, 10 months ago

"THEY" have been setting up the crash since the day Sam Brownback got elected - it is not a case of Sam's plan not working. In fact the ALEC plan is working with the help of fraud perhaps, untruths perhaps, a massive cover up installed perhaps and lots of political rhetoric to keep Kansan's appeased.

What is happening with KPER's money?

With so much moving funds from one place to another how does anyone truly know where the tax dollars went? Transparency and honesty are might not be strong points within any of the ALEC administrations.

Steve King 1 year, 10 months ago

What's missing from this discussion is the total of monies "transferred". What's missing is a plan to make up ground for these losses. What is the plan to reimburse the Hundreds of Millions taken out of the DOT account? Until you add back those dollars you aren't ahead of the game. How many thousands of jobs did Brownback promise us per month and how many actually happened?

This is the guy, who in is charge of the State and said AFTER the election he didn't realize the state finances were in such bad shape. This after countless reports in the news and state reports. A CEO who is so out of touch with the financial condition of his "charge" would have been fired immediately for incompetence.

This man is dangerous for the state. History will revile his name.

Greg Cooper 1 year, 10 months ago

Except in the new, revised Brrownbackistan, there'll be no use for history.

Terry Rossiter 1 year, 10 months ago

Everyone sounds pretty united in the comments, and I also am concerned about our "Dear Leader" so ...are there any legal actions that can be taken or do we have to wait until the polls open up? I was told that Sam got elected by the voters in "Rural Kansas" and I still haven't grasped that as I would think that most of Northeast Kansas would have cancelled those votes out. Why didn't these folks elect the Rev. Fred Phelps instead? Wouldn't of been much different, both are embarrassing and bigoted. Kansas deserves much better!

Richard Heckler 1 year, 10 months ago

Where is the KPERS money?

Where is the Public Education money?

If these revenue tax dollars cannot be found where did they go?

If these revenue tax dollars cannot be found who took them?

Where are all of the KDOT tax $$$$$$ going? And did the tax dollars go where taxpayers have been told?

The American Legislative Exchange Council Party operates behind closed doors and refuses to allow the press entry for their entire "meetings". No matter that legislation is being designed behind these closed doors and many tax dollar supported officials are behind these closed doors. And that Speaker Ray Merrick is a board member and allows this questionable activity.

So of course taxpayers should be meeting behind closed doors to establish how best to expose ALEC for what it is and to discover the means as to how a full blown tax dollar audit can be accomplished.

Remember Governor Brownback was in Washington D.C. when some big money problems arosewhich basically got swept under the rug because the events occurred under republican umbrellas.

Iran Contra Illegal Weapons Sale which involved big profit for a few not to mention Iran was a friend to the GOP in this matter.

This put millions out of jobs and ripped off tons of retirement packages which put many golden agers back into the work force to supplement their Social Security Insurance.

--- What did Bush and Henry Paulson do with the $700 billion of bail out money? http://www.democracynow.org/2009/9/10/good_billions_after_bad_one_year

Where did this 700 billion tax dollars go and how were those selected that received this money?

Governor Brownback never demanded criminal investigations because the GOP once again were the culprits.

Lots of dirty laundry and likely only the tip of an iceberg.

Stealing children's funds, health care funds, KDOT funds, educations funds is not balancing the budget.
