Trial rescheduled for man accused of shooting 16-year-old

A trial for a man accused of shooting a teenage boy just southwest of Lawrence High School has been rescheduled.

Anthony Jermaine Taylor, 19, of Lawrence, was arrested Sept. 18 after allegedly running up to a 16-year-old Lawrence boy in his driveway at 4:30 a.m., striking him with a 9mm handgun and shooting him as he tried to run away, according to the affidavit supporting Taylor’s arrest. Taylor is charged with felony aggravated battery.

The trial was scheduled to begin Nov. 16. At a status conference today, Taylor’s attorney, Elbridge Griffy IV, requested a continuation, saying he is waiting on “a very relevant discovery” involving DNA testing of the weapon used in the alleged incident.

Chief Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild allowed the trial to be continued until Jan. 27. Another status conference will be held prior to the trial date on Jan. 11.

Griffy said during the conference that he had not heard about a possible plea deal. However, prosecutor C.J. Rieg said she had sent him one.

The victim in the case was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment Sept. 18 and released the same day.

Taylor is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $75,000 bond.
