Style Scout: Clay Burkhead
Name: Clay Burkhead
Age: 25
Relationship status: In a relationship.
Hometown: Emporia
Time in Lawrence: Five-ish years now
Occupation: Unpublished novelist
Dream job: Published novelist slash stay-at-home dad
Describe your style: Inexpensive; unassuming; utilitarian.
Fashion trends you love: Anything Bowie-inspired — and there’s always something, I’m pretty sure, happening that’s Bowie-inspired.
Fashion trends you hate: I don’t think I would express distaste over what anyone’s wearing for themselves. I think I’m cool with it. Could Aryan Nations tattoos apply to things I don’t agree with? Anything swastika-related, as well.
Fashion influences: “Huckleberry Finn,” the novel; Bowie; space operas.
What are your favorite and least favorite things about Lawrence? Favorite thing: Downtown community. It’s a sort of unique, self-sustaining district. Least favorite thing: University students in vehicles.
Tattoos or piercings: Bob Dylan quote, “Any day now, any day now, I shall be released” — and the banner from Kurosawa’s “Seven Samurai,” 1954.
What’s your spirit animal? A crow perched on a Minotaur’s shoulder. I’ve thought hard about that question. Crows, for their perception and familial unity or adherence — murders of crows are usually families, that’s cool. The Minotaur for labyrinthine connotations, maybe.
Whom do people say you look like? Martin Starr, the guy from “Silicon Valley” — I get that a lot.
Tell us a secret: I don’t trust bicycles. I don’t ride them. I know how, but I don’t ride them. It could be called a fear, but I’d rather say a vigilant distrust.
