No Ebola for patient at KU Hospital

? A Kansas University Hospital patient who recently traveled to Sierra Leone does not have Ebola, according to a Saturday news release.

The hospital had said Friday evening that the man had been admitted for testing but was considered at ?very low risk? for the virus. He did test positive for malaria Saturday but was responding well to treatment, the hospital added.

“We knew that when the tests showed he had malaria as the likely cause for his symptoms that Ebola was unlikely,”? Chief Medical Officer Lee Norman said. ?”We are quite pleased that the tests show he doesn’t have Ebola. Now, he can go home and recover in his own home.”

Sierra Leone and neighboring Guinea have been experiencing a widespread Ebola outbreak for more than a year. Earlier this month, the Ebola outbreak was declared over in another neighboring country, Liberia.

KU Hospital officials said the patient called before arriving at the hospital and was placed in strict isolation. All precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were being taken, officials said, and the public was never at risk.
