Emergency workers responded to a call just after 6 a.m. Monday of a man in his 40s bleeding outside the McDonald’s at 1309 W. Sixth St., Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Monday. Based on the nature of his injuries, police ruled the man’s death a homicide.

Police have yet to release the identity of the man. McKinley said Monday that the name will not be publicized until the autopsy has been completed, which could take days.

Neighbor Chris Chavez said Monday that he saw the man slumped over in the east side of the restaurant parking lot waiting for medics to arrive. McKinley said officers landed on the 700 Arkansas St. location, a single-family home, after following a blood trail from McDonald’s.

On Tuesday, three detectives combed the yard and a storm shelter at the home while other officers blocked off the portion of Seventh Street just outside the home. The detectives also sifted through items inside a white SUV parked in front of the home, removing numerous men’s shoes, apparel and plastic jugs from the vehicle.

Officers on Monday dusted the vehicle for fingerprints and collected items from the vehicle into evidence.

An officer and his trained police dog from the Shawnee Police Department’s K-9 unit assisted Lawrence police at the scene Tuesday afternoon. The police dog sniffed through the area, occasionally darting to areas that sparked its interest. Police did not indicate specifically what the dog was searching for.

This is Lawrence’s first homicide of 2015. The last homicide in Lawrence happened more than six months ago inside an apartment at 1727 W. 24th St.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lawrence Police Department at 785-832-7509 or CrimeStoppers at 785-843-TIPS (8477), McKinley said. Calls made to CrimeStoppers can be made anonymously. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered by CrimeStoppers for information leading to an arrest in this case.
