25 years ago: Congressional candidate receives 6-month sentence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 24, 1990:

  • A Lawrence man running for Congress refused to back down from his pro-legalization stance on marijuana and was sentenced by a Douglas County district judge to a six-month jail term. Mark Creamer, 43, exited smiling from the courtroom after District Judge James Paddock handed down the sentence. Paddock said he had sent Creamer to jail because of a previous conviction for attempting to possess marijuana and because Creamer had “no respect at all for the law.” “The judge is right,” Creamer told reporters. “I have refused to recant my statements. I was hoping the judge would stand with me.” Creamer added he had already made plans to run his campaign for the 2nd Congressional District seat from his jail cell.
  • Skies over Lawrence opened up and poured at about 7:30 this morning, soaking the area with an unofficial 1.70 inches of rain and triggering scattered electrical outages. Bill Seidel, district manager for KPL Gas Service, said this morning that lightning accompanying the rainstorm had caused about 25 scattered outages, each involving four or five customers.
