40 years ago: Citizens committee discusses policy on religion in schools

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 23, 1975:

A marathon session was held this week by a citizens committee attempting to draft a proposed school district policy on religion in the schools. The committee was revising a proposal written April 8, taking into account suggestions made at a May 5 meeting. The plan, which was to be presented to the Lawrence District 497 school board on June 9, outlined the group’s opinion on permissible approaches to religion in the classroom and the role of educators. Guidelines in the plan included examples of what religious symbols could be displayed, and when; when references to God were acceptable; and how and when religion could be studied. The committee had recently added two paragraphs dealing with the need for teacher awareness of student rights and freedoms.
