40 years ago: Lawrence garbage collectors to put limits on appliance pickups

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 15, 1975:

The Lawrence Sanitation Department decided this week to put some limits on what it would pick up on bulk collection days. For years, residents have been able to put anything out on the curb that two sanitation workers could put into one of the city trucks. As of next week, heavy appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, and washing machines would be left untouched by workers. Assistant City Manager Mike Wildgen said the policy change had been requested by the new Lawrence Sanitation Workers Union and was being adopted for two reasons. First, he said, the large items could damage the hydraulics in the packer trucks; and second, the work of picking up appliances was dangerous and had resulted in increased worker compensation claims. Lawrence residents were now faced with the necessity of taking their old appliances to the landfill, where it would cost about 50 cents to dispose of one of them.
