25 years ago: Population unfortunately booming at local animal shelter

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 13, 1990:

The animal shelter at the Lawrence Humane Society was having a record year, but this was not good news for the animals and the employees. “There’s a definite problem out there, and people are going to have to start spaying and neutering their pets,” said shelter manager Roma Tesch. Tesch, who had worked at the shelter for 10 years, said more dogs and cats had been left at the shelter this spring and that they were coming in earlier than ever before. “We usually don’t have this many until June or July,” she said, adding that many adult animals had been coming in, compared to the many puppies and kittens in previous years. “It’s not the students who are bringing in the animals, it’s the general public,” she explained. “But finals are still going on, and we may bet some from the students next week.” She added that the number one reason people gave when bringing in an animal was that their landlord didn’t allow pets. “If people are moving somewhere where they’re not allowed to have pets, then they shouldn’t get a pet,” Tesch said.
