40 years ago: Intruder disrupts party at rural pond

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 12, 1975:

  • The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was investigating an aggravated burglary case that had occurred over the weekend near a rural pond. Officers said a witness had reported a swimming and sunbathing party west of Lawrence had been disrupted by a man in a pickup truck who had driven into the area, deliberately running over the Swimmers’ belongings. When one of the party attendees had yelled for someone to make note of the truck’s license number, the driver had left the truck and extended an open invitation to fight. As the witness attempted to intervene, the man had pointed a small caliber pistol at him and had made verbal threats. At that point, another person inside the truck had called to the man, who had left and driven away. Officers were searching for a white man in his 40s driving a late-model Dodge truck.
  • Three planning items were facing the Lawrence City Commission at their meeting this week. They included a resolution to build a controversial storm sewer project at Sixth and Michigan. The project had been approved by commissioners, but bids for it had come in much higher than the city’s original estimate. The commission was also considering the rezoning of 6.1 acres on Iowa Street, north of the Kansas Turnpike, from residential to industrial for a truck terminal. Lastly, commissioners were to consider a site plan for a warehouse on the 200 block of Locust.
