Lawrence Libations: Draft Brew at Alchemy Coffee and Bake House

How does a glass of cold-brew coffee come to look like (and sort of taste like) a pint of Guinness? That’s the question we hoped to answer in this week’s Lawrence Libations, which took us to Alchemy Coffee and Bake House for a taste of the shop’s intriguing Draft Brew.

Draft Brew from Alchemy Coffee and Bake House, 1901 Massachusetts St.

Despite some early confusion (on our end), the coffee beverage doesn’t actually have beer in it. Most of the process takes place at Alchemy’s warehouse at 111 Riverfront Road, where concentrated cold brew is stored in a keg and pressurized with nitrogen — the “same gas they use for Guinness,” Alchemy owner Ben Farmer proudly points out.

At Farmer’s suggestion, I sampled the orange hop Draft Brew, which is infused with — you guessed it — orange and hops (they also make a vanilla flavor and are experimenting with many others).

The result is a strong, fizzy, cold cup of coffee that looks like a dark ale. Adding nitrogen to the brew creates plenty of bubbles, which rise to the top to create a frothy head.

The hard stuff: Nothing. This one’s kid-friendly, if you’re a kid who enjoys really strong coffee.

Where it’s served:Alchemy Coffee, 1901 Massachusetts St. You can also find various flavors of Alchemy’s Draft Brew on tap at the Burger Stand (803 Massachusetts St.), and it will soon be at Merchants Pub and Plate, 746 Massachusetts St.

What you’ll pay: $3.25 after tax for 8 ounces, $4.25 after tax for 12 ounces and $5.25 after tax for 16 ounces.

Other libations at this location: New creations are always popping up at Alchemy, though its “building blocks” begin with espresso, cold brew and “pour over” varieties.
