40 years ago: Three inoperable warning sirens removed for repairs

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 29, 1975:

Three of the city’s disaster warning sirens were out of commission today. Chuck Belote, Civil Defense director, said today that the receiving units for the sirens had been disconnected in an attempt to determine why they had failed to respond to the deactivation signal during tests. Belote said the city sirens would be tested again in a few days, whether the three inoperable sirens were back in working order or not. A three-minute test, involving about a minute each of the natural disaster and nuclear disaster signals with a minute of silence between, was planned for noon Monday.
