40 years ago: Large grant to make KU art museum a reality

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 28, 1975:

  • A new art museum at Kansas University was to become a reality thanks to a large grant from the Kenneth A. and Helen F. Spencer Foundation, Kansas City. It was the largest gift made to KU up to that time. Announcement of the gift was made by the KU Endowment Association, which was to supervise the building project for Mrs. Spencer and the university. Necessary site approval had been given by the Kansas Board of Regents, and the state legislature had been asked to appropriate funds for provision of utility facilities. The new building, expected to be one of the finest school art museums in the nation, was to be located on the west side of Mississippi Street, across from the Kansas Union.
  • Plans were under way for the 14th annual Lawrence Art Guild “Art in the Park” exhibit on May 4. The major change in the rules for this year was that the show was to be limited to persons 18 years or older. In the past, some junior high and high school students had exhibited their art at the show. The guild was to continue to take a 10 percent commission on all sales to fund its programs.
