40 years ago: Local residents anticipate tax rebate checks

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 27, 1975:

  • Many local residents were looking forward to possible tax rebate checks this coming summer. Lawrence residents, along with taxpayers across the nation, would receive rebates averaging 10 percent of their 1974 taxes, but not exceeding $200, if Congress’ $24.8 billion tax cut package were to become law. The bill had been designed in part to help U.S. citizens cope with rising inflation. “We feel we can use it now,” said Lawrence resident Eva Mason, “because in a year’s time what will $200 really be worth?” Ruth Coon, 1908 E. 19th, said a rebate would hep pay bills and help families deal with the unstable economy. “It will help a lot of lower and middle class people get caught up a little bit,” Coon said.
  • Lawrence was expected to receive an unusually white Easter. After a good soaking today, the area was headed for freezing temperatures and possibly snow tonight and tomorrow. The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm watch for the area with chances of snow, high winds, and colder temperatures.
