Editorial: Community gift

The Douglas County Community Foundation is an ongoing gift to Lawrence and Douglas County.

The announcement this week of $213,000 in grants is another reminder of the important local role played by the Douglas County Community Foundation.

The foundation was established in 2000 with a major gift from long-time resident Tensie Oldfather and has benefitted in subsequent years by many generous local supporters who have contributed money earmarked for specific purposes or to be allocated at the discretion of the foundation’s board. This week’s grants represent only a small portion of the foundation’s activities. Last year, the foundation awarded 515 grants totalling $2.8 million.

The projects that received funds this week contribute to the community’s health in many ways. They will help provide transportation for youngsters who will benefit from therapy services. They will support early learning opportunities for young children and help ensure local students have the computer access they need to be successful in school. A walking garden for frail elderly residents received funds, as did a suicide prevention program. The 37 nonprofit agencies that received grant funds touch virtually every resident of Douglas County.

Anyone who would like to give back to this community should explore the possibilities the community foundation has to offer. The foundation is an amazing tool that combines sound financial management with a detailed process to make sure funds are distributed according to the donors’ wishes to the most worthy projects.

It’s a gift that keeps on giving to Lawrence and Douglas County.
