40 years ago: Schoolchildren still enjoy traditional playground games

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1975:

An article in today’s Journal-World noted that Lawrence schoolchildren were still playing the same games at recess that their older siblings, and perhaps their parents, had played while in school. “They are still doing rhymes while jumping rope,” said Mickey Woolard, a kindergarten student teacher at Hillcrest School. “The rhymes have changed, but they still like to jump rope and they love hopscotch.” Children were also organizing their own team sports, such as kickball, during recess, and in some cases they were getting quite heated about it. “Sometimes they tend to be argumentative,” admitted Lila Schwaner, a Woodland School sixth-grade teacher. “There aren’t any really bad arguments, but they are very competitive.” Sixth-grader Jimmy Beerbower said most of his friends brought sleds during the winter, and Schwaner said that even when bad weather kept the students indoors, the children made up games or played with puzzles. The time-honored tradition of baseball cards seemed to be on its way out, according to Woolard. “Now they bring monster cards, and they even bring hockey cards,” Woolard said. “There seem to be cards for everything.”
