40 years ago: City, county to discuss day care funding

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 19, 1975:

The Lawrence City Commission this week agreed to discuss funding for day care centers at an upcoming meeting with Douglas County commissioners. The city had been asked to provide $4,000 for the Douglas County Child Care Association, to be used to buy child care service for children in Lawrence day care centers. Lucile Paden, who had made the request, had told the city that the county had informally agreed to $5,000 if the city would allocate $4,000. This was the first request for funds from the association since the previous May, when members had appealed to the city for emergency funds to keep local programs afloat when state and federal funds were terminated. The city had consistently refused to fund day care except on an emergency basis, but the commission this week seemed more receptive to the idea when they were told their $4,000 would be used to get $24,000 in matching funds from state and federal sources.
