40 years ago: Local dairy charged with deceptive sales

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 17, 1975:

  • An injunction was filed this week in Douglas County District Court by the Kansas Attorney General’s office against All Star Dairy, seeking a halt to alleged deceptive sales practices. The petition charged All Star, its owner, and its distributor with selling cartons of milk containing about 4 1/2 fluid ounces less than their labeled amount. Affidavits in the petition showed various weights and measure officials had inspected milk cartons in Olathe and Kansas City, Kan., grocery stores and had found them deficient.
  • Increases in the cost of sugar and cocoa meant that this year’s Easter candy was going to cost an average of 25 to 30 percent more than in 1974. The increase was expected to affect most seasonal treats including chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, marshmallow eggs, and candy chicks. The outlook was forecast to be even worse the following year because raw materials for candy now on the shelves had been ordered before the worst of the price increases had taken effect.
