40 years ago: Lawrence residents mostly happy with their city, survey says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 11, 1975:

A recent survey, presented to the Citizens’ Advisory Council this week, revealed that Lawrence residents generally liked their city but agreed that it had some problems. The survey, distributed in early February, obtained a 47 to 51 percent return on the 1,000 questionnaires distributed. Of those surveyed, 18.8 percent strongly agreed, and 66.7 percent agreed, that they were satisfied with their lifestyle in Lawrence, while just 10.4 percent disagreed and only three percent disagreed strongly. Respondents generally believed there were not enough job opportunities in the city and that public transportation was inadequate; however, the school system was rated as “excellent” by many residents even while schools were noted as a high priority in what could be done to improve the city. Survey results also showed concern with local hospital facilities, lack of vocational training, crime and law enforcement, and limited care facilities for the elderly. Of all city services, the Lawrence Public Library received the highest rating, with more than half the respondents saying the library was “excellent” and more than 40 percent saying it was “good.”
