25 years ago: Violent crime increasing locally, statewide

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 10, 1990:

Violent crime in Lawrence and Douglas County had followed statewide trends in the recent past, increasing 9 percent from 1988 to 1989, according to statistics released by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The report showed 235 violent crimes had been committed locally in 1988 and 256 in 1989. Statewide, violent crime had risen 13.3 percent, from 8,920 in 1988 to 10,110 in 1989. The overall statistics, including non-violent crimes, showed Lawrence with a 4.7 percent decrease. Murder had increased at a higher rate than any other Douglas County crime, from one murder in 1988 to six in 1989, none of which had occurred within the city limits. Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson partly attributed the increase to the county’s proximity to Kansas City and Topeka, pointing out that three of the six 1989 murder victims had been from those communities.
