40 years ago: New ‘special occasion’ flag flying over KU

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 8, 1975:

  • A new flag was flying over Mount Oread today. The flag, measuring eight feet wide and 12 feet long, displayed a field of blue on both ends with a white center emblazoned with a red “KU” outlined in dark blue. The new banner did not replace the everyday flag, which was a simple blue with red letters, but would be flown on special days at Kansas University, explained Vince Bilotta, associate director of the KU Alumni Association. Today’s special occasion was the KU-Oklahoma basketball game, to be held this afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.
  • Local law enforcement officials reported the recovery of an estimated $15,000 in stolen goods and the arrest of one man during raids at an unspecified number of locations the previous day. The recovered items, including several televisions and stereos, were believed to have been taken from apartments in town during the past several months, many of them occupied by KU students. About 30 officers from the Lawrence Police Department, the Douglas County sheriff’s office, and KU Parking and Security participated in the raids.
