25 years ago: County science fair draws hundreds of exhibits

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 3, 1990:

  • More than 400 exhibits were on display at this week’s Douglas County Science Fair. “The turnout was significantly more than we’ve ever had before,” said Dave Nordlund, chairman of the fair. Nordlund said there were 469 exhibits this year, compared with 349 in the previous year. The exhibits represented students in most of the schools in Lawrence School District 497 and several more from around the county. However, none of the exhibits were from Lawrence High School students. “The only time we have a high school exhibit is if there’s a high school science teacher who really pushes for it,” Nordlund said.
  • Local officials were seeking the public’s assistance in the investigation of the death of Christopher George Bread, whose body had been found on the north side of East 15th Street, about a mile east of the city limits, early the previous morning. An autopsy had determined that the 19-year-old man had died of head injuries, but authorities said they didn’t know what had caused the injuries. Douglas County Sheriff Loren Anderson said this morning that officers had no suspects so far in the death of Bread, whose parents were both instructors at Haskell Indian Junior College.
